7 Job Hunting Tips for 2021 in Executive Search

You may just be about to start thinking about a search for a new Executive or Non-Executive role to bring new perspective in 2021. So, we have put together our 7 tips for you to consider before you commence your search.

This is not a definitive list, but merely a guide based on all our years of experience in executive search. You will find that there is also plenty of support online, but here is what we think you should start to think about before embarking on your search for a new role:

1.    Have an Up to Date CV

Be ready for when the upturn comes and have your CV prepared. We recommend a CV has a short introductory profile explaining who you are, what you bring and what type of role you are preferably seeking i.e. an Exec or Non-Exec role, a field of specialism etc. Our guides on writing CVs and cover letters go into greater detail on what to include and exclude).

2.    Make it Easy to Contact You

Ensure you provide clear contact details such as your mobile, email and your location. If you will consider a relocation, be sure to make it the geographical parameters of your search clear e.g. ‘relocating to the Midlands in July 2021’. That way we can come back with the most appropriate roles. You may be really open to locations so again we advise you say that you are very flexible on location.

3.    Have a LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is a great way to showcase yourself, if appropriate. Make sure your profile accurately reflects the roles and dates on your CV. The profile does not need to be as detailed as your CV, but it should have the essence of who you are, what roles you have had, where you have worked and what you have done. Make sure the ‘About’ section is filled in as that is a great way to highlight yourself and your strengths. Remember a LinkedIn profile is in the public domain so follow the right protocols in terms of what you can put out about yourself and your background. Make sure it is accurate, fair and true and not breaching any confidentiality agreements, i.e not to say ‘seeking a new role’ when you are still employed.

4.    Network

What we mean by this is consider your own professional contact and supply chain network. Your own network is often vaster that you realise and can include your ex-colleagues, alumni, professional services contacts such as lawyers, corporate finance, private equity and so on. You should use LinkedIn to request appropriate connections, ensuring you are polite, asking after them as well also explaining the reason for the request.

5.    Search Online Portals for Your Next Role

There are many websites available for your search, as well as boutique search firms such as ourselves. Some search firms such as ours work mainly on confidential and therefore unadvertised roles, so it’s best to contact that firm directly. At Moon Exec Search, we often work under an NDA, so be prepared to be asked to complete one when being briefed on a specific role. Send your CV and a short covering email outlining your position and preferences and follow up after a few days if you have not heard back. (Please note that we try and come back and engage with you as soon as we can, but we are currently seeing a higher than normal volume of interest, so bear with us).

6.    Be Prepared for a Video Call Interview

Obviously, it is difficult to meet in person during the Covid-19 lockdown, but we can do the next best thing – a video conference, skype or zoom call. So, make sure you look smart and are prepared and check out our article highlighting tips to succeed and another focusing on video call etiquette.

7.    Avoid Job Hunting Every Day

We are living in unprecedented and sometimes worrying times and the danger is that you overload yourself with the job search. We advocate you spending time away from your search and set yourself specific days for this. With access to online portals, you can check in on the results every few days and then respond accordingly.

At Moon Executive Search, we have been supporting candidates for over 20 years now. Many of our trusted and long terms clients started their relationship with us as a candidate and we are proud of those long-standing relationships. Good luck with your search from all the team at Moon and don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help.
