Bristol Museums Development Trust seeks up to 3 New Trustees (Unpaid Volunteers).

Join the board that supports Bristol’s world-class collections of museum objects, specimens, art and archives that have existed since Georgian times.

Bristol Museums Development Trust, is an independent charity (RCN 1137777) that supports Bristol Museums and Bristol Archives.  It helps raise funds for Bristol Museums: s: M ShedBristol Museum & Art Gallery, The Georgian House Museum, The Red Lodge Museum, Blaise Castle House Museum - as well as Bristol Archives (formerly Bristol Record Office), King’s Weston Roman Villa, as well as Bristol Archives (formerly Bristol Record Office), and King’s Weston Roman Villa.

As a Board member, you will work closely with senior staff at Bristol Culture to help maximise its potential as Bristol’s foremost heritage and cultural institution.  You will also be taken on a personal voyage of discovery into the extraordinary collections and archives. With over 1.75 million objects, across three main collecting areas of art, people, and the world, there is something for everyone. You will also find out how Bristol’s diverse local communities play a major role in Bristol Museums and Bristol Archives.

You will use your strong networking skills to help spread the word among private individuals, trustees of charitable foundations and Bristol’s business community about the wealth of opportunities for them to support Bristol’s culture, heritage, and natural environment. At Board meetings you will make decisions on how unrestricted donations from visitors are allocated across Bristol Museums, giving you greater insight into how museums and archives operate.

The time commitment is quarterly Board meetings, plus attendance at private views and other exclusive events such as corporate receptions and occasional royal visits. Reasonable travel expenses are paid. 


If you have a passion for Bristol’s heritage, culture or its natural environment, strong networking skills and a willingness to develop relationships to help secure funding from private individuals, trusts, and companies, please get in touch.  One of the following is also desirable: 

  • Experience of being a trustee, non-executive or senior manager

  • Digital marketing, PR & Comms, fundraising or Legal (Charity Law) skillset is preferred.

  • An understanding of how local/national policymaking affects Bristol’s heritage and culture would also be useful.
