Programme Director – Bristol Changing Futures Programme

Salary c£60k + benefits

Fixed term contract to March 2024. There is an opportunity for this role to be fulfilled as a secondment.



Second Step is a leading mental health charity that has been putting mental health first for people in Bristol and the Southwest for over 30 years. Second Step believes that with the right support, everyone can take control of their life and make their future their own.

Second Step is the lead agency, in a partnership of organisations, chosen by Bristol City Council, to deliver the MHCLG Changing Futures programme in Bristol. This new, exciting programme has been designed to support people facing multiple disadvantages, including discrimination, homelessness, domestic abuse, mental health, drug and alcohol and interactions with the criminal justice system. 

The programme’s aims are:

  • To improve the way that local systems and services work for people experiencing multiple disadvantage and who are traditionally not well served by services

  • To use the learning from this to influence future government programmes and policy

Changing Futures’ purpose is to make a lasting impact through profound cultural and systemic change.

We are looking to appoint the new role of Programme Director, to lead and manage the Changing Futures programme, working to deliver the City’s vision, aims, objectives, outcomes and activities.

You will be passionate about making a difference and meeting the needs of hidden, underserved communities; you will have proven strategic leadership skills to work across organisational boundaries, working with the Changing Futures Programme Board and other networks across the city, leading the Programme Office, and overseeing the delivery to achieve our ambitious goals. Co-production sits at the heart of Changing Futures; the right candidate will demonstrate a willingness to engage and work closely with people with lived experience.


We are seeking candidates who bring a proven ability to work successfully and collaboratively in a team environment across organisational boundaries, sectors, agencies. Ideally you will have experience of working in/ or with the voluntary sector preferably with a focus on people with complex and multiple needs, which could be related to mental health, drug and alcohol, homelessness, and interactions with the criminal justice system. You will also have experience of leading system change with proven experience of business planning.
